Issue Background


You will want to conduct your research independently, but below you will finds some suggested websites to look into to find information on your issue. 

  • Pro-Con.org This website breaks down the pro and con arguments for a number of controversial issues.
  • OnTheIssues.org   This website details the stances that political parties and politicians take on various issues.
  • U.S. Laws and Regulations This government website should help you find information about current laws and regulations. You may have to poke around a bit!
  • New York Times Archives Search through the archives of news articles back to 1851!
  • NY Times Learning Network
  • Wikipedia Watch this video for tips on how to use Wikipedia effectively for research.
  • Wall Street Journal Search through the Wall Street Journal.

Congressional Committees

Steps to follow in conducting your research:
  1. Google: " *your policy issue* and Congressional Committee"
  2. Sort through the results to find both a House Committee and Senate Committee that has worked on a bill related to your policy issue.
  3. Once you select a committee or a subcommittee related to your issue, research the committee to find out who the Chairperson is.
  4. Once you know the Chairperson, investigate them - what is there stance on your issue? How have they voted on related bills?
  5. Use what you find to inform how you think this committee chairperson will affect your decision.

Your best bet for finding out the information you need about lobbying organizations related to your issue is to begin by Googling it and then digging deeper.  Below you will find two links that may be helpful.
